Although nearly all households in the Cook Islands are connected to grid electricity, only 5.5% of households have additional solar photovoltaic systems installed, and 1% use small diesel generators. Several actions have taken place throughout the islands to increase the uptake of renewable energy.
[pdf] MPower, a subsidiary of Australian power sector investor Tag Pacific Ltd (ASX:TAG), has won a contract to design and install a 5.6-MWh battery energy storage system in Rarotonga, the capital of the Cook Islands.
[pdf] Three newly commissioned battery systems on Rarotonga which cost US$16 million (approx. NZ$24m) will reduce the island’s dependence on oil-fuelled power generation and continue the shift to solar power.
