HONIARA, SOLOMON ISLANDS (12 September 2024)– The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands are joining other partners to help Solomon Islands transition to renewable energy with a transformational project that will accelerate renewable energy generation and battery storage system installation, support power sector reforms, and promote private sector participation in the renewable energy generation.
[pdf] The solar power plant in Tulagi has been commissioned in September 2023. Commissioning of the power plants in Kirakira, Malu'u and Munda is expected in Q3 2024, while Lata is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024. A consultant has been recruited to undertake the training program.
[pdf] Three newly commissioned battery systems on Rarotonga which cost US$16 million (approx. NZ$24m) will reduce the island’s dependence on oil-fuelled power generation and continue the shift to solar power.
